Mystery Dog Illness

WHAT IS THE NEW MYSTERY DOG ILLNESS?

This mystery illness has been around since last year (2022), with a large spike in cases starting in
August of 2023. As of right now, a bacterium or virus has been identified that is possibly causing
the respiratory illness in dogs. The cause is still unknown, and it is not responsive to traditional treatments.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes and nose, lethargy, and difficulty breathing.
The dogs do not test positive for any respiratory illness such as kennel cough.
The coughing may last for a few weeks, or even months. In some dogs, the coughing turns into pneumonia
sometimes within 24-36 hours of having symptoms.

WHAT CAN I DO AS A DOG OWNER?

Make sure your dogs are up to date on all vaccines, specifically Bordetella, Adenovirus type 2,
and parainfluenza. If your pup gets any of these symptoms, take them to the vet immediately, as the
symptoms progress quickly. Early treatment makes a huge difference in recovery.

WHAT CAN I DO AS A DAYCARE

AND BOARDING FACILITY?

Make sure every dog is up to date on vaccines and screen them
at drop off for any signs of illness. Remove any group toys and
water/food bowls if possible. If any dog starts to show symptoms,
have the dog isolated into an isolation kennel or removed from the
facility immediately. Sanitize everything in between each dog
and as often as possible. Having kennels that are easy to clean
helps the sanitation process. Check out our line of kennels made
from FDA certified antimicrobial HDPE plastic:
