Why doesn't Gator Products' gates and all-metal kennels use welded wire?

Our kennels systems do not use welded wire for safety reasons. We've found that welded wire is prone to having sharp points that might poke or scratch the animal or employee. Also, the animal held within the enclosure will eventually find the weak welds and work them loose. This can cause injury as well as damage to the kennel. If the welded wire is galvanized before it is welded into place, then every welded joint will be susceptible to rusting anyway -also causing health and injury hazards.

Another reason Gator Products is avoiding galvanized steel, is due to the environmental and health risks involved with the galvanization process. There has been evidence that small animals can be metal poisoned by chewing on the galvanized mesh. This evidence is still being researched, but Gator Products would rather avoid the problem. In order to weld the galvanized mesh, the areas to be welded must be ground or sanded to remove the galvanization. If not properly vented, the fine dust can easily enter the lungs and cause health issues for the worker.
Instead, Gator Products uses aluminum rod that is drilled and riveted together. This creates a much stronger kennel that does not have sharp points or weak spots that might work loose. The aluminum rod that Gator Products uses is ¼" in diameter instead of the thin wire. The spacing between the rods is 1½", ensuring that the animals will be securely contained inside.
